Getting to Dover and checking in
The ferries leave from Dover's Eastern Docks at the end of the M20/A20 - follow the DFDS lanes at the port entrance. Treat the check-in time in your booking confirmation as the deadline; since late 2025 the EU Entry/Exit System registers travellers biometrically at the port before departure, so allow extra margin on your first crossing under the new system and on summer Saturdays.
On board
Two hours pass quickly on the big DFDS ships: the restaurants and café run around the clock, there is duty-free shopping, a play area for children, free WiFi and plenty of deck. A premium lounge is available on selected crossings. Payment works by card in pounds and euros.
Vehicles and pets
Cars, motorhomes, caravans and motorbikes travel in the usual lanes, booked by real length and height. This is a vehicles-only route - no foot passengers - and pets are welcome but stay in the vehicle for the crossing, so park with ventilation in mind and carry the animal health certificate for the French side.
Arrival in Dunkirk and onward travel
You land at Loon-Plage on the western edge of Dunkirk, straight onto the A16. That motorway is the route's argument: Belgium in about half an hour, Bruges in about an hour, Lille under an hour via the A25 - for journeys to Flanders, the Netherlands or the German autobahn network, Dunkirk starts you measurably closer than Calais. Dunkirk itself deserves a stop too: the beaches of the 1940 evacuation, the port museum and a rebuilt town centre with its belfry.

How long is the crossing compared with Calais?+
About two hours, against 90 minutes to Calais. What the longer crossing buys is geography: Dunkirk lies east of Calais, so journeys towards Belgium, the Netherlands or Germany save most of the difference back on the road.
Can I cross as a foot passenger?+

Can I take my dog?+

Where exactly do I arrive?+
The ferry port is at Loon-Plage, west of Dunkirk itself, directly on the A16 motorway. Belgium is about half an hour away, Bruges roughly an hour, and the A16/A25 fan out towards Lille and the north. For central Dunkirk and its beaches, plan a short drive east.
