Getting to Poole and checking in
The ferry terminal sits on Poole Harbour, signed from the A31/A350 and about half an hour from Bournemouth. It is a compact port - simpler to navigate than Dover or Portsmouth - but the check-in deadline in your booking confirmation still applies, with extra lead time for pets. Morning departures mean an early start from further afield; from London allow a good two and a half hours to be safe.
On board
The Barfleur is a classic cross-Channel ferry: restaurant, bar, shop, lounges and open deck. At under five hours the crossing sits comfortably in a day - lunch on board, an hour on deck watching the Isle of Wight and then the Cotentin appear, and no need for a cabin, though day cabins exist if you want a base. Cards are accepted on board in pounds and euros.
Vehicles, bikes and pets
Cars, motorhomes, caravans, motorbikes and bicycles all travel; book by the vehicle's real length and height. Whether foot passenger tickets are offered for your date shows in the booking step. Pets cross with the GB-to-France paperwork - microchip, rabies vaccination at least 21 days old, animal health certificate within ten days - and the earlier pet check-in of about 90 minutes.
Arrival in Cherbourg and onward travel
Cherbourg-en-Cotentin greets you with a real harbour town: the Cité de la Mer by the port, a walkable centre, and the whole Cotentin peninsula behind it. West lie Barneville-Carteret and the surf beaches; south, the road to Mont-Saint-Michel and Brittany; east, Utah Beach, Sainte-Mère-Église and the way to Bayeux. An afternoon arrival leaves time to reach most of Normandy before dinner.
